Case studies & current projects.

I do not name clients or use their logos. That has been a standing policy since 2012.
What follows is what happened, described honestly, without the branding.

In 2013, a global angel investor group engaged me to evaluate a mobile payments product venture. It's target sectors included premium segments in the B2B and B2C space. After analysing customer journeys across various sectors to determine market viability, I advised the startup to pivot

Three challenges, untangled.

Redesigning what a hospital stay feels like for a child with cancer.

A leading Asian hospital's paediatric oncology division presented a challenge to me that wasn't clinical: How might we improve patient experience on a shoestring budget?

Redirecting a mobile payments product startup toward a sector it had not considered.

On engagement by a global angel investor group, I was advising a venture in the mobile payments product space. The Management team was fixated on targeting premium clientele, 5-star hotels, fine dining restaurants, etc. Based on research, interviews and journey maps, I advised the venture to pivot to a target segment that was a better fit.

Transforming a traditional publisher into an ecosystem.

A publishing house first brought me in to get its mindset and business ready for fundraising. Once they raised the investment, I briefly led the reader product line within their new technology arm, guiding their tech team on building an e-reader app intended, at least in my own ambition for it, to someday compete with Kindle.

Range, across sub-sectors.

  • A Global Education Support Ecosystem Venture: Helped a study-abroad support startup ecosystem design its user process, positioning, allied services, and revenue model.

  • A Robotics Training Company: Ran market/competitive research for an angel investor, then advised the robotics-training startup on growth strategy and capability gaps.

  • An Online Education Venture: Built marketing, web content, social media, email and telemarketing strategy for a school-exam-prep ed-tech startup.

  • Growth for a Hospitality Tech. Company: Defined service offerings, pricing and financial projections, then built the investor-facing business plan for a hotel-tech solution.

  • India Growth for a Gulf-based SEZ: Created competitive positioning, sector focus, and an outreach strategy/database to help a Gulf SEZ's India arm attract manufacturers.

  • A Crowdfunding Venture: Designed a fee-based investor model and a bank-partnership proposal to help a startup crowdfunding platform scale.

  • A Credit Ratings Advisory firm / Venture Capital arm: Helped set up a credit-rating firm's new VC advisory arm and worked its first deal, a manufacturing diversification raise.

  • Diversification of a Highly Reputed Consulting firm to the B2C Space: Shaped service lines, customer segments, org structure and social strategy for a consulting firm's move into B2C education/training/networking.

  • The Dream of an Airline: Built a business plan and route/city selection and pricing model for an aircraft-MRO company's planned foray into the commercial airline business.

  • A Business Process Outsourcing firm: Diagnosed a BPO's plateaued sales and growing attrition; identified target sectors, hiring fixes, and new service lines to lift margins.

  • A Singapore based Brand Strategy firm: Ran segmentation and built a client-acquisition pipeline for a Singapore B2B branding firm's entry into India.

  • A Modeling Agency: Guided a personality-development venture's evolution into a modeling agency via new services, org structure, and rebranded communications.

THANK ME LATER

Unsolicited. One-way. No introduction needed.

Every so often, I notice something a large consumer company could be doing differently or better, for its users. And I write to their leaders about it. I do this for free, and for fun. And the company receiving the idea is free to use it without any financial or other obligation.
A few examples of ideas sent to product and leadership teams at companies like Google, WhatsApp and Spotify; interface and behavioural improvements, workflow refinements, content-discovery tweaks.

  • For Gmail
2013: An email layout idea to help transform the way we write emails. The idea was for a nested or grouped layout, so especially professional emails could be written in a more structured manner, and be easier to read and understand by the receiver.

  • For Todoist (ranked "the best to-do list right now" by The Verge)
2022: A feature idea to help users effectively prioritize tasks in a more intuitive and convenient manner.

  • For Food Delivery services
2021: A product feature idea for food ordering apps where one could schedule an order for a future date in advance. This would be particularly useful for users who might risk forgetting a special day. It could also help restaurants plan their preparation a little better, and even make deliveries a little more efficient. apart from offering convenience to users.

  • For an FAA approved Airline Middle seat design
In 2019, US FAA approved Molon Labe Seating‘s (MLS) seat design for commercial airplanes. However, I found some layout and user experience concerns with this layout, so I proposed a better airline seating layout design [2021].

  • A potential leading cause of hospital infections
Between 5-10% of patients receiving treatment in US hospitals, and between 11-60% of those in India, tend to contract infections at the hospital that are not present at the time of admission. I attempted to find at least one seemingly invisible causative factor that I felt could be a leading cause of at least a lot of nosocomial infections in surgery patients.

  • For WhatsApp
A feature idea proposed to WhatsApp, where users could mute serial forwarders on groups.

  • For Note & Planner apps
A feature idea for note-taking and planner apps where users could be offered a 'Review Mode' with select function options; so they could make minor changes without the keypad constantly getting in the way.

  • For Tesla's Supercharging wait-time problem
In 2017, I suggested a battery layout idea to Tesla to dramatically improve their supercharging wait times. Electric car charging times are still a time-consuming affair with many auto manufacturers. This idea, especially if used on a universal battery design and size, could significantly further the adoption of electric cars.

  • For Spotify to improve user experience and its own valuation
I recently wrote to the CEO of Spotify, offering them a product function that could also potentially improve their company valuation. It was a function similar to what Shazam does in terms of discovering music.

I don't share these to claim credit or a relationship that doesn't exist. I share them because they make the case that useful thinking needs intent, and not necessarily requires an invitation, a warm introduction, or a prior project together to be worth having.

WHAT I'M BUILDING

I'm not only advising from the sidelines.

Thoughtful Products: The strategy of everyday design

A YouTube channel highlighting fascinating product design features and guidelines, behavioural insights and productivity tips.

  • Youtube

A mobile phone stand

A premium consumer product in the making, currently back at the drawing board. A few rounds of 3D-printed prototypes surfaced a manufacturing design challenge currently being rethought before it goes further.

Neither is finished. Both are among some instances that I'm not only guiding from the sidelines.
